Around 200 people have turned out to attend a Melbourne rally to protest what they call the “rise of Islam” in their local area.

The rally, organised by the anti-immigration group the True Blue Crew, was held at Hannah Watts Park in Melton today.

Protesters donned Australian flags, masks and signs, saying they wanted to halt the spread of Islam in their area, and across the nation.

The group called Islam a “barbaric ideology that isn’t welcome in Australia”.

A speech from United Patriots Front leader Blair Cottrell told supporters: “you’re either Australian or a bloody enemy and you can get out.”

Protesters then marched to the Melton City Council chanting “whose streets, our streets”.

A group of True Blue Crew members confronted another anti-Islam group, where violent slurs ensued, but were quickly abated by surrounding police.

An earlier anti-Islam rally in May this year saw violent clashes between far-right extremists and pro-Immigration supporters.

One member, Paul, who did not wish to give his last name, said the True Blue Crew “represents the Australian way of life”.

Steven Joyce, an attendee from Bendigo, said he wanted an “Australia for Australian people”.

“People come here because they want to be Australian, so they should do so and not refer to themselves as from a specific community,” he said.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten called the rally “unnecessary”.

“Australia is a diverse country and I don’t believe in fomenting religious paranoia or hatred,” Mr Shorten said today.

“That’s not the way this country works together.”
